Carte Blanche House Party Mix

For those of you who haven't been told, DJ Mehdi and Riton decided to work together under the name Carte Blanche. They're gonna produce and go on tour together. Four tables, one mixer, and a TR-909. Oh and one minor detail... no electro, strictly house music. :/

Back in February they dropped their single "In the Mix". Which sounded pretty good except for the repeated vocals "In the Mix" were pretty annoying/repetitive. But thats house music I guess...

Here's a 'House Party Mix' the two dropped today. I'm currently listening to it so I can't comment, but here's what Mehdi had to say on his blog (download link within):

My Peoples,

Couldn’t be more thrilled to present you this HOUSE PARTY MIX, mixed by RITON and yours truly aka CARTE BLANCHE.

CARTE BLANCHE (RITON + DJ MEHDI) will be on tour around the world this spring, so that’s also a good idea of what to expect—

The Juan MacLean

It appears The Juan MacLean dropped their Dj Kicks album today. Pretty interested to see how this ones gonna turn out. I'm not the biggest Juan MacLean fan, but anything on DFA always grabs my attention and usually for good reason.

For tracklisting and a free mp3 download check out their website and go pick up the album over at !K7.

Hey Today!

Likely to be the electro track of the summer, Hey Today!'s 'Talk to Me' is big. And equally as big is Busy P's remix. Here's what Pedro himself had to say about it:

A few weeks ago, we were touring Australia for Parklife. TIGA was closing our stage every night, in front of 10,000 kids ready to rumble with him, to get wrestled to the ground.

And, as usual, he throws out his secret weapon, "TALK TO ME". The crowd explodes. That’s when I ran onstage screaming, "T-Dawg, what's that sound????"

The only reply I got was a big, creepy grin... Merci!

One late night, on the narrow streets of Melbourne, TIGA and I went out for a little boogie with the Bang Gang squad. Our Aussie friends know how to look after us. We spent the night at Sorry Grandma!, the hottest club in town, drinking Rave Juice and trying to understand drunk Aussies’ sub-English accents.

I knew it was the perfect time to ask TIGA about that insane track he was playing. Ask a drunk man something and you'll get everything you need. Everything.

"HEY TODAY!" he said. "Wait, the German guys responsible for "If I Was Wonderwoman" a few years ago?" I replied.

"Can I have another Rave Juice, P?" he replied to my reply. Nice.

Anyway, I now knew it was some Germans who did that Herbie Hancock-meets-LFO track!

I never gave up. We were back from OZ, me in Paris, TIGA in Montreal, iChatting like we often do. And that little "Transfarts" window pops up on my screen!

"TALK TO ME" became the highlight of my DJ set, the moment where you see stars in the eyes of the crowd’s head. Not only it is my favorite track of 2010, I even had the chance to remix it!

What the hell can you do with such a monster tune? Make something harder? Impossible. Make something better? Not possible. Make something faster? The opposite of possible. Make something stronger? The train has pulled out of Possibility Town. I wanted something deeper, more mental, bringing two worlds together, Detroit and Rotterdam.

Here is HEY TODAY!'s new single "TALK TO ME." Have fun with it.

P

As always, if you hear something you like, go support the artists at Turbo Records or Beatport.

M.I.A. - Born Free

The video is top notch and I know this video is supposed to display the ignorance of persecuting people based on their physical appearance, but it still has left me typing WTF??

In other news... hard summer tour...?

Here's a little blast from the past

Some older Disco/Funk/Soul

Here's a few gems that have been on heavy rotation lately. You won't find anything here post-1980.

Leon Huff - "Tight Money"

Recognize that intro from somewhere...?

I'm pretty sure I posted this a while back, but who cares...

The track title speaks for itself.

I apologize for the lack of downloads and the sub-par replacement with youtube videos, but I was advised by discoaladisco's legal team that we don't want to step on any old school funksters' toes. *cough* you can find all these tracks online if you are crafty enough *cough* But vinyl really does sound so much better than mp3's.

Cool Cats

I know I'm kinda late on putting this up. Bummed I missed the Club 75 mayhem at Coachella so hopefully this will kinda make up for it... see you there!

Burns

Burns has been an act I've wanted to catch for a while now. I dig his music a lot. Lot's of filters. He just released a new EP called So Many Nights. Listening to 'Fourteen' over and over again, it sort of reminds me of a 90's trance record I'd find at Amoeba but with a ton of compression. Maybe too much. Either way I like it.

Two videos of tracks off the So Many Nights EP. Take a listen and if you like there's some music waiting for you below. Enjoy.

4/20 jams

As long as I've known about the meaning of the day, I've never been able to pinpoint the origin. I mean I learned this was Hitler's birthday when the Columbine Shooting went down. Both occurring on April 20th. It also happens to be my boy Jon's birthday. Happy Birthday dude (that's for Jon, not Hitler). But how did 4/20 get to be the international holiday for potheads? The most reliable theory (only because Wikipedia supports it) is that, back in the 70s, kids at San Rafael High School would meet at 4:20pm after school to smoke pot. April 20th is the day a lot of growers start their summer crop cycle.

Regardless of the origin, one can hardly deny marijuana's influence (as well as many other substances) on many musicians and music in general.

I don't smoke anymore, but here are some jams that are only about ganja and getting irie. Enjoy.

"...they had just got a sack weighing 3.5/ it was 4:19/ just about that time." I like this song because it reminds me of all the hazy/lazy dayz I spent up in IV. Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) is a great band out of Santa Barbara check them out.

Peter Tosh. RIP my dude.

I could have probably put any of Devin's tracks on here, but this one is just too ridiculous not too post.

Oh man with that soundbite I wish I could post the whole Towelie episode. "Noooo you're a towel!" Mystics Roots, long before they were Pato Banton's touring band.

Bone Thugs and their counterparts all have sooo many songs about dank, but these two by Krayzie take the cake.

Ratatat doin work on Kanye.

Cheers

A Rare Hip/Hop Post

So I realized I've been neglecting my old friend Hip/Hop for at least a year now. I mean don't get me wrong I try to stay up to date with whats going on, but I really feel like the overall (and I say this generally speaking because I know there are some bangers out there that I didn't know about) quality of Hip/Hop has gone down hill. Significantly. I honestly can't listen to rap stations I used to listen to anymore because I just don't feel at least 80% of the shit thats on there. KDAY, now thats a different story. Quality.. but thats only because they play tracks from pre-2000.

These tracks aren't all new, but they're what's helping me get reacquainted with an old friend.

Banger

I have to give credit to Et Musique Pour Tous for diggin this one. Hadn't played this track in yyyears. I dig the mashup he posted (and I'm a 99% mashup hater), but you gotta go with original material on this one.

Getting ready for the holiday this Tuesday I'm guessing. Produced by Diplo. Straight comedy on this one.

Really feelin' Strong Arm Steady. If you haven't copped the Stoney Jackson album go do that immediately. You will not be disappointed. Also check out the Stones Throw Podcast.

Sampling Classixx. And with Talib on it... You know its gonna be legit.

You really can't go wrong with Fools Gold. Be on the look out for cameos.

Wolfgang Gartner

Deep house producer/DJ gone electro. I think the change of genre suits him very well. Wolfgang Gartner is probably one of the hottest acts to catch right about now as the next couple months find him traveling the globe hitting up the festivals to night spots. Of course I still have yet to see him live and thats not gonna change as i don't see him coming to LA anytime soon, but who knows... maybe i'll make it to lolla. Anyways back to the topic at hand. This dudes very skilled behind the decks and in the studio. If you've been sleepin then wake up and take a listen.

I couldn't help but post this photo I found of the wolf as a youngin. Check out the Juno-60 and tr-808. Cool parents.

Phinz

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about the man known as Phinz. From the Land Down Under, the boy makes some "block rockin beats". 'Atari Disco' and 'Text to Speech' are definitely my go to tracks for Phinz. It reminds me of Boys Noize with the robot voices/arpy synths/solid drumwork, but has this horror/spook aspect to it I just can't put my finger on. I think TMS said it the best: "It sounds like Boys Noize's 'Gax' met one of the Valerie collective and had a child together." Solid.

You can download most of his tracks off soundcloud. Had to pick up a few remixes I didn't have myself..

12's

Why are The Twelves so good? Brazil. Funky. Disco. Beats. Yes, that pretty much sums it up. Oh and the fact that everything they release is gold. Except for that 'Noah and the Whale' song... I never did like that very much. Regardless, every mix they drop is better than the last. Their latest take on N. Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club is no different.

And a few older gems...

And to save me from posting every song of their's, here's the latest mixtape. Guaranteed to make any party get down.

Bonus Round:

Catch the Brazilian duo w/ Grum at the V-Lounge on May 8th... But don't worry, that'll have a post of it's own very soon.

Treasure Fingers

Well I guess it's a good thing I'm not going to Coachella this year. Ah man, that sentence just sounds so wrong. But not entirely. Treasure Fingers will be doing Control this Friday along with Nick Catchdubs and Kill the Noise.

Word has it, Treasure Fingers is gonna be dropping a compilation LP Life of the Afterparty on Fools Gold sometime in the near future. So check out his new track and get your disco on. See you Friday.

Bonobo

Well it was a pretty solid weekend of music/partying and to kind of get me mellowed I've been listening to a lot of Bonobo. I had never heard of him until a couple weeks ago driving home one night listening to Garth Trinidad's show on KCRW. Awesome show from 8-10pm every night (I think), but I digress. Bonobo has that amazing downtempo sound, very chilled but beat driven. He just released a new album called Black Sands. I haven't listened to his previous releases, but if they're anything like this one. Wow. Good stuff start to finish.

After a little bit of research, it appears the dude Bonobo will be playing a gig at the El Rey this month (April 22nd). Certainly check him out and pick up an LP, mp3, or CD over at Ninja Tune.

Jacques Renault

I should have put this up a while ago, but it sort of got lost in the mix of my hundreds of weekly/daily downloads. Actually it didn't. I listen to this mix every chance I can, I just never got around to putting it up here. Pure disco start to finish.

If you dig it, show Jacques some love and buy a record or two at Juno or Flexx.

Cheers.

Disco Monday

This is gonna be a short and (hopefully) sweet post as I'm really sick and don't feel like doing anything but drinking Nyquil and sleeping.

Peace.

Breakbot Minimix

Breakbot doing his thing. The amount of funk and disco that is packed into 5 minutes is simply breathtaking. Props to Dodselectro for the heads up.

Wow, if anyone can figure out this track listing that would be some serious music knowledge right there. Here's my attempt:

Adventures with Grand Master Flash on the Wheels of Steel

Brothers Johnson - Light up the Night

MJ - Scream

Yuksek - Extraball (Breakbot Remix)
BTW the visuals are freakin awesome!

And that's all I got for now...
